"Pseudein" is Greek and means "to lie," and "morphe" means "shape" or "form" in the same language. A pseudomorphosis is therefore a "shape of lies."
 A mineral that appears in a form to which it is not entitled, that gives an appearance that does not correspond to the truth.

 Pseudomorphs can turn a frog into a prince in fairy tales. But in mineralogy, ordinary stones can actually become true gemstones, such as the opal pseudomorph after ikaite.
