 Cornwall is the only region where active mining took place not only on the coast but also beneath the seabed: as early as 1774, miners at the Botallack Mine opened up the legendary Crown's & Hazard Lodes as a "submarine mine" to extract tin and copper. Magnificent, intensely colored copper minerals, botryoidal chalcopyrite, "nailhead" chalcocite and cassiterite, zonal siderite, and beautiful fluorite are distinctive hallmarks of the entire region, which extends into the southern part of Devon.
