The enthusiasm for fluorite as a collector's mineral is quite understandable. Hardly any other mineral offers such a diverse range of colors and forms. Its association with quartz and calcite, as well as other mineral species, is virtually limitless. The number of deposits and its worldwide distribution result in the very frequent occurrence of the sought-after fluorite crystals.
The opening of the vast country of China to the Western world ushered in a new era for fluorite collectors. Early offerings, such as the fluorite from Shanghai, sold like hotcakes. However, the current role of Chinese fluorite mining, as well as the frequency of finds of well-formed and attractive crystals, is not yet supported by sufficient, comprehensive information across individual locations. This issue of Extralapis provides a general overview of the deposits in China and showcases excellent photographs of fluorite finds there.
